The Ulcer

The stomach ulcer is a disease more widespread than than one could believe. A person on ten will develop at least an ulcer during her life. In spite of this considerable number of cases to come, many people concerned remain in the blur relating to what is the ulcer, its symptoms and its possible complications.

The stomach uses gastric juices to digest the food which we swallow. It is covered with a very thick mucous membrane which protects it from this acidity. But when the regeneration of this wall is disturbed, a lesion can appear. This “hole” in the stomach is called partial or total ulcer.

The ulcers can be formed in the wall of the stomach (gastric ulcer), the duodenum (first part of the small intestine) or of the oesophagus. Even if acidity in the stomach plays a significant part in the formation of an ulcer, other factors can be in question, including the nicotinism and certain drugs anti-inflammatory drugs.

The symptoms related to an ulcer are variable, but they can include the feeling of burn in the top of the abdomen or a painful hunger less than three hours after the meals. These unpleasant feelings can also reach the back. Other signs like nauseas, the vomiting, the digesting troubles… can also appear. Sometimes, of the serious complications can occur like bleedings or a perforation (erosion of the ulcer through the wall of the stomach or the intestine).

In 99% of the cases, the ulcers would be due to a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. However, it is not a question there from there of the single cause of ulcer.

There exist factors being able to worsen an existing ulcer or to intensify the demonstrations like the tobacco of them; alcohol, coffee, stress, anti-inflammatory drugs, corticoids… It is to better follow a food balanced without too fatty dishes or then too spiced.
